You Are Really Going to Do This… Aren’t You??

Wednesday evening I was over at my friend Andrew’s house. He’d invited some friends to hang out and play dominoes on his front porch. I love that April is front porch weather in Tucson. It was 38 degrees in Grand Rapids that night…

It was late and the party had dwindled down to just a few people chatting in the living room. Of course, I ended up talking about my favorite topic, Walking Home. “There still so much to do, but everything is going smoothly.” Andrew leaned forward on the couch, turned to me and said, “Wow, you are really going to do this… aren’t you?”

Andrew is one of my videographers. In fact, he made the video for my Kickstarter campaign. I knew he wasn’t really asking me if I was serious. So, I just smiled and replied, “Yep, that’s the plan.”

He stood up and hunched his shoulders a little. With a shake of his head, he said, “What you are doing is really ballsy.”

“Yep, I suppose it is.” I smiled again, then added, “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

As my departure date draws near, more and more friends are starting to make comments like this. I can guess why. They are proud of me and what I’m doing, but they are also worried. They can’t quite believe that I am going to walk, everyday for 2000 miles across the country.

So I wanted to let you know… Yes, I am really going to do this:

I have quit my job.
I am renting out my house.
I had checkups with the doctor, optometrist, and dentist.
I am sending out press releases.
I bought a laptop, webcam, new glasses, lightweight backpack, solar kit, business cards and stickers.

May 1st, I am walking home.

And yes, I will be very, very careful. I love you all for your concern and generosity. Come walk with me.

Greetings from the breakfast table with my morning cup of joe,

-Laura
